User B Case Study Report

The following data was collected for a 45 year old male working with the same certified Skill Building Specialist (SBS)* for a total of 16 months when the data was used for this case study. Official data collection for case study began during the 2nd quarter of User B’s prior plan year. User B made very little progress with either of the 2 goals below when depending on only his professionals field experience, personal training history, plan implementation and data collection methods.

User B Complete Results

User B Progress Before & After

User B demonstrated measurable improvement across both goals after Independio’s structured manual features were introduced. The combined average success rate for Household Chores and Cooking remained unchanged at 29.2% during both quarters before Independio features were. It then increased to 41.7% after three months and 54.2% after six months.

This represents a 25.0-percentage-point improvement and approximately 85.8% relative growth from the most recent pre-Independio baseline. The results are especially notable because User B demonstrated no measurable success-rate growth between the two baseline quarters, but improved during both quarters after Independio was introduced.

Household Chores Goal Progress Charts

Prior to using the structured manual Independio program, User B was making 42.6% progress after 2 quarters of working on a goal for Social Participation; which included 9 opportunities with 5 successful goal completions within 47 prompts (which was 11 more prompts than the prompting limit).

After 3 months of implementing the manual checklists to add structure to User A’s goal progress, User A reached 68.3% in 3 months on 9 opportunities with 7 successful opportunities within 41 prompts, and, after 6 months, User A reached 86% in 9 opportunities with 8 successful goal completions within 37 prompts. The 6 months results showed that User A was able to reach the goal as it was written.

Once this goal was met, SBS lowered the prompting limit to 3 prompts per successful opportunity to support continued practice of the goal and encourage User A toward further independence.

Before Independio, User B completed 4 of 12 Household Chores opportunities successfully, resulting in a 33.3% success rate during both baseline quarters. Successful completions increased to 5 of 12 after three months, or 41.7%, and 6 of 12 after six months, or 50.0%.

Prompting needs also decreased. Average prompts per successful completion declined from 14.0 immediately before Independio to 11.4 after three months and 8.2 after six months, representing an approximately 41.7% reduction. Total quarterly prompts decreased from 56 to 49.

User B has not yet met the complete Household Chores goal. The written goal requires at least 9 successful opportunities out of 12 and no more than 48 total prompts, equivalent to an average of four prompts per opportunity. After six months, User B completed 6 of 12 opportunities successfully and used 49 prompts—one prompt above the quarterly limit. Nevertheless, improvement continued during both post-Independio quarters.

Before Independio, User B completed 3 of 12 Cooking opportunities successfully, resulting in a 25.0% success rate during both baseline quarters. Successful completions increased to 5 of 12 after three months, or 41.7%, and 7 of 12 after six months, or 58.3%.

Average prompts per successful completion decreased from approximately 9.3 immediately before Independio to 5.0 after three months and 3.4 after six months, representing an approximately 63.3% reduction. Total quarterly prompts decreased from 28 to 24.

After six months, User B met both components of the Cooking goal. The success rate reached 58.3%, exceeding the required 55%, while prompt use reached the written limit of 24 total prompts, equivalent to two prompts per opportunity. This represents a transition from meeting neither requirement before Independio to meeting the complete Cooking goal after six months.

User B Overall Progress with Independio's Features

Household Chores Goal Calculations

User B’s goal reads:

“User B will complete all four household chores (cleaning floors, counters, bathroom and laundry) at least one time per week within 4 prompts 75% of the time for one quarter.”

Data collected in 2nd Quarter (6 months before Independio features were introduced):

  • O = 12
  • S = 4
  • P = 48
  • PR = 61

4/12 = 0.333 * 100 = 33.3% success rate, 61/4 = 15.3 prompts to successes

Data collected in 3rd Quarter (3 months before Independio features were introduced):

  • O = 12
  • S = 4
  • P = 48
  • PR = 56

4/12 = 0.333 * 100 = 33.3% success rate, 56/4 = 14.0 prompts to successes

Data collected in 4th Quarter (3 months after Independio features were introduced):

  • O = 12
  • S = 5
  • P = 48
  • PR = 57

5/12 = 0.417 * 100 = 41.7% success rate, 57/5 = 11.4 prompts to successes

Data collected in 1st Quarter (6 months after Independio features were introduced):

  • O = 12
  • S = 6
  • P = 48
  • PR = 49

6/12 = 0.5 * 100 = 50% success rate, 49/6 = 8.2 prompts to successes

“User B will cook a meal for himself at least one time per week within 2 prompts 55% of the time for one quarter.”

Data collected in 2nd Quarter (6 months before Independio features were introduced):

  • O = 12
  • S = 3
  • P = 24
  • PR = 26

3/12 = 0.25 * 100 = 25% success rate, 26/24 = 8.7 prompts to successes

Data collected in 3rd Quarter (3 months before Independio features were introduced):

  • O = 12
  • S = 3
  • P = 24
  • PR = 28

3/12 = 0.25 * 100 = 25% success rate, 28/24 = 9.3 prompts to successes

Conclusions

The strongest finding is the change from no measurable baseline growth to consistent improvement after Independio’s manual features were introduced. User B’s combined average success rate remained at 29.2% across both pre-Independio quarters, then increased to 41.7% after three months and 54.2% after six months.

Improvement occurred across both skill areas, but the greatest change was observed in Cooking. The Cooking success rate increased from 25.0% to 58.3%, representing a 133.2% relative increase, while prompting decreased enough for User B to meet the goal as written. Household Chores also improved, with a 50.2% relative increase in the success rate and a substantial reduction in prompts per successful completion, although the full success requirement has not yet been reached.

Overall, the simultaneous increase in successful opportunities and decrease in prompting suggests that User B made progress toward greater independence after Independio’s structured manual features were introduced. These results provide encouraging preliminary evidence of improved performance and reduced support needs across two daily-living skill areas.

Limitations & Future Research Directions with Independio

Because this case study includes only one participant without a comparison group, the results are presented as preliminary evidence of a positive association rather than proof that Independio features alone caused the improvement. In addition, Independio was used in conjunction with Skill Building and/or Behavioral services in all case studies, showing an additional correlation between Independio features and professional staff involvement when working on these skills.

Case studies conducted on individuals with verbal skills did perform higher overall with Independio, however, the single case study with the individual who is non-verbal, did not make as much progress as the other cases, though there was still a marked improvement in skill acquisition.

Based on the evidence of the case studies presented, there is a lot of promise for Independio use to increase skill mastery and decrease prompts received after a 6 month period. In addition, the qualitative data from professional staff shows that professionals are finding their individuals easier to work with, the data is much easier to manage, and reports were easier to file. More data is needed to determine if the individual maintained the level of mastery after a year and beyond.
